Description

Silicon Photonic Integrated Circuits for Imaging and Information Processing

Silicon photonic (SiP) integrated circuits (IC) are commercially used for optical communications in datacenters. This talk will cover two other applications of SiP ICs, namely, imaging and signal processing. First, I will cover SiP optical phased arrays with applications in lidar and imaging. Second, I will talk about all-optical signal processing using SiP. Specifically, I will demonstrate all- optical amplitude modulators, sequence detectors, and logic gates using commercial foundry SiP processes.

Bio:
Hossein Hashemi is a professor of electrical and computer engineering, Ming Hsieh Faculty Fellow, and a co-director of the Ming Hsieh Institute at the University of Southern California. His research interests include electronics and photonics integrated circuits and systems. He was a co-recipient of the 2004 IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits Best Paper Award for demonstrating the first single-chip millimeter-wave phased array receiver, the 2007 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference Lewis Winner Award for demonstrating the first millimeter-wave CMOS phased array transceiver, and the 2016 Nokia Bell Labs prize for large-scale optical phased array. He is a Fellow of IEEE and Optica.
