Alyssa Apsel, IBM Professor of Engineering, has been reappointed to a three-year term as director of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective July 1, 2023.
She was first appointed to the leadership position in 2018.
“Over the last five years, Alyssa has ably led the school through a period of change,” said Lynden Archer, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering. “I applaud her calm, transparent leadership style, as well as her consistent, forceful advocacy of ECE priorities and her effectiveness in building the ECE community at Cornell Tech.”
Apsel joined Cornell Engineering in 2002, the same year she received her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Swarthmore College and her master’s degree at California Institute of Technology.
Throughout her career at Cornell, Apsel has been a productive and entrepreneurial researcher and inventor. Her research focuses on the leading edge of ultra-low power and flexible RF interfaces for the Internet of Things. She has authored or coauthored over 100 refereed publications — including one book — on topics including RF mixed signal circuit design, ultra-low power radio, interconnect design and planning, photonic integration, and process invariant circuit design techniques. Her work has resulted in ten patents, as well as numerous awards, and she has co-founded multiple companies.
“I look forward to continuing our work together to nurture, recognize and support the excellence of our faculty, staff, and students in ECE and to modernize the research and teaching infrastructure in Phillips Hall,” Archer said.
